About BAH & Dependents
BAH has only two tiers: with dependents and without dependents. The number of dependents does not change the rate. BAH is tax-free and covers approximately 95% of estimated housing costs for your area and rank, with a 5% member cost-share. Rates are updated January 1st each year based on DoD surveys of local rental markets and utilities.
Rate Protection
Your individual BAH cannot decrease due to market changes as long as you stay at the same duty station with the same rank and dependency status. BAH can only decrease if you PCS to a new location, are demoted, or experience a dependency status change.
