Bad Credit VA Loans in West Virginia
VA sets no minimum credit score. Here’s what West Virginia lenders actually require, and why WV home prices work in your favor on a thin file.

If you have been Googling "minimum credit score for a VA loan," you have probably seen a dozen different numbers. 620. 640. 680. Everyone has an answer, and most of them are wrong. Here is the truth, straight from the VA handbook.
Key Points
The VA has no minimum credit score requirement. Most lenders set their own minimums, typically 620. Some specialized lenders work with scores as low as 500 to 580 through manual underwriting. Your overall payment history matters more than a single number.
This surprises a lot of veterans. The VA itself does not draw a line in the sand on credit scores. That is not a rumor or a workaround. It is official policy.

Individual lenders set their own credit score minimums on top of VA guidelines. These are called "overlays." The most common cutoff is 620, but some of the bigger lenders want 640 or even 680.
That does not mean you are out of options if your score is below 620. It means you need a different lender. A few specialized lenders will work with scores in the 500 to 580 range by using manual underwriting instead of running everything through an automated system.
Instead of fixating on a number, the VA wants underwriters to look at the bigger picture.

If your score is below 620, manual underwriting is usually the path forward. During manual underwriting, a real person reviews your full financial picture instead of letting software make the call. Compensating factors that help include:
VA Handbook Excerpt
"Lenders are encouraged to make VA loans to all qualified Veterans who apply. VA's underwriting standards are intended to provide guidelines for underwriters. Decisions must be based on sound application of the standards, and underwriters are expected to use good judgment and flexibility in applying underwriting guidelines."

Do not let one lender's "no" convince you that you cannot get a VA loan. A higher credit score (680 or above) will get you better rates and a smoother process, but it is not the only way in. If your score is lower, the right lender can still make it work.
If you want someone to take an honest look at your situation, speak with a VA-approved lender who actually understands manual underwriting. Not every lender does, and that makes all the difference.
